Climate Change Commitments and The Electricity Gap
In 2014, Ontario has promised to shut down all coal plants in an effort to tackle climate change. At the same time a number of Ontario's aging nuclear reactors begin to shut down permanently or for years of repair, creating an ‘electricity gap'.
The province intends to fill the electricity gap with electricity from gas-fired plants or by importing coal-generated power from the U.S. Both of these options produce greenhouse gas pollution and undermine the province's commitment to fight climate change.

Filling the Gap with a Clean Energy Portfolio
Ontario needs an effective short-term energy strategy to guarantee that
coal is phased out, to decrease dependence on natural gas and costly
nuclear refurbishments and to ensure that Ontario remains a leader in
both climate and green energy policy.
